Girl advice. - Tina Marie's Ramblings
Red hair and black leather, my favorite colour scheme...
Girl advice.
Okay, I need girl-type advice.

My hair is going gray. Not bad, yet, just starting to streak, but I'd rather it not. It's long, halfway down my back, and straight.

In the summer, it sort of fades to a reddish-brown. I really like that color, and if I'm going to color it, that's the color I want.

I've done the "invite a friend and color your hair" thing before, and I've never been very happy with it. The color never comes out the color I want, it's hard to maintain, and it usually looks like a murder has happened in my bathroom when we're done.

So I'm thinking of going to a salon to have it done. Now, I'm a Supercuts sort of girl. I'm not sure if going to a Supercuts/TGIF place is really an improvement over doing it in my bathroom. But I don't have a stylist I really like to go to either, and it seems like picking one out of a phone book isn't a good idea.

And, if I do go to a salon, how do I express what color I want? Bring a picture? And what if it turns out entirely wrong - does that just happen, and do I have to wait the year it will take to grow all out before I try again?

Oh, yes, and the ends are still red from the attempt nearly 18 months ago - is that a problem? How often do I have to go get it done to keep it looking decent?

I'm so bad at this being-a-girl stuff. help? please?

Okay, not a girl, but I used to get my hair coloured at a salon for a while a few years back.

The salon should have magazines with pictures of people in, and also a sample board that has hair dyed some of the different colours that they have available. But I would imagine that if you have a picture that has the exact colour that you want, it's got to be easier than trying to describe it.

I have to get my hair cut every 5-6 weeks or so, because if I let it get any longer it grows out sideways and looks horrendous. When I did that, there would still be some of the old colour left, but they would just put the new colour over the top of it, and you couldn't tell where the old one was. If your hair is longer than mine, the colour should last longer than that, particularly if your natural colour is similar to the new one (and here is where I start to wander into the realm of not knowing what I'm talking about,
so I shouldn't really comment further).

In the long run, the simplest way to get rid of grey hair is to quit your job, move to a medium-sized town in the country, and make a modest but satisfying living as the head of a little aviation community.

My hairdresser (in Houston) suggested that I had blonde highlights in my hair. I respectfully disagreed and asked for a number 1 back and sides, and 4 on top.

*laugh* I don't think that's a look that would work for me.

Which? The blonde streaks or the #4 on top/ #1 sides/back?

Anyway, it's not grey, it's ash-blonde as a completely grey-haired friend I know calls it :-)

The #4 on top/ #1 sides/back. Although I don't have the coloring to pull off blonde, even in streaks.
