My mother just called me...
It seems she heard that there was so much information on the Internet that it was "going to explode, or something".

Imminent Death Of The Internet Predicted
News at 11.

Gotta love the September That Never Ended.

In other news, my little brother is off at Christian college. They're filtering his Internet access so heavily that he can't even google. I don't know much more then that - this is what I got from him:

I gave that a try, and it doesn't work. IE says Access Denied Access control configuration prevents your request from being allowed at this time.
It's not just your site or the card site. Pretty much everything is blocked. I think they just allow certain sites rather, than ban sites. Even google, apple, and microsoft.com aren't allowed. Marxism evolves.

Besides sending him to the library to learn about Marxism, anyone have any suggestions for what to tell him? I could set up apache to tunnel, but that won't help if he can't get to my apache server. I'm thinking maybe VPN? I think we might try setting my server as a proxy, and see how that goes. Maybe try some port other then 80.

You're my geeky friends. Suggest something. :)

Current Mood: chipper chipper

That's on my list of options. In fact, I think I'll stick the server on my machine tonight and have him try it tomorrow...

Thanks!

"the Internet" is going to explode? "the Internet" doesn't exist as a physical entity at all - the Internet is the sum of all the connections among the zillions of computers, routers, etc., that are all connected together at any one moment. (besides, it's not nearly full yet.

um, and what the fuck is your brother doing, going to a brainwashing"Christian" college?

Don't get me started. Let's just say that my mother is the religious type, and leave it at that?

i have to assume he's still under 18, or else none of this would be an issue. and Mom is in for a nasty shock when he comes of age...

Assuming...

Assuming they allow Internet access at all (i.e stuff other than port 80) here are a few options to consider.

0. Set up Squid on your Rackshack server. Have him set his proxy settings to your Squid server (on something other than port 80) and your proxy server will do the work. Put it on your Rackshack server. Make sure the ACLs are set to not let the whole internet use it though - do at least some authentication!
1. SSH to an outside server, use elinks. No images of course but better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Simple and can be set up in minutes.
2. Get a Linux system, configure CIPE. CIPE is a simple VPN that can operate on *any* UDP port. At your end, set up a CIPE server for him, possibly on your RackShack server. Requires a bit more work, but not too hard.
3. (Not really desirable) Tunnel over SSH - the trouble with encapsulating IP in SSH is that when you wind up with TCP being tunnelled over TCP you can run into some nasty problems which stop the link working if there's any packet loss at all.
4. IPSEC, but I bet they block the protocol number.
5. Tell him to buy his own cable modem access, or rent privately and get his own cable modem. Probably the most expensive solution, but judging by the way they filter their internet, they probably don't have particularly fun dorms. (Of course, he might be religious, I don't know - I was very surprised when I went to the US because I met so many young people who still believed in God, I don't think anyone under 50 in Britain bothers with religion, and most people here don't believe in God).

When I worked at one place where they did some web blocking, one of my cow-orkers set up some sort of ssh tunnel through the web proxy to his home machine. I forget all the details, only that instead of making my default route the company router, I set it to his machine, and then I could reach the whole world both through the web and through ssh. I vaugely recall the ssh tunnel program was called "anaconda" or something like that.

As for your mother, she probably heard a paraphrase of http://www.forbes.com/execpicks/feeds/general/2004/09/10/generalcomtex_2004_09_10_ir_0000-5884-KEYWORD.Missing.html
where Intel predicts that the World Wide Web is about to collapse on its own success and they need to architect something better.

Isn't having information about the real world hidden from you the reason that you go to a Christian "college?"

They have a system for that, it's called compartmentalization. In one compartment in your head you learn about biology, physics, archeology, market theory, and so forth. In the other compartment you learn that the cosmos has a personality, a name, and is obsessed with your sex life, and also that the Earth is 6,000 years old. You become skilled at never, ever connecting the two compartments. (The last person who did that blew one of his ears clear off his head.)
