Another day, another compile break...
This morning, when I got to work, I couldn't ssh on to my home server to check my email. And my web server wasn't talking. Or the mail server.

So I went home at lunch, rebooted the DSL modem and the router, and I still didn't have DSL. So I came back to work and called tech support.

They denied it was on their end. No matter how much I protested that, yes, I knew what I was doing, and no, I really hadn't changed anything on my end, they insisted it couldn't be their problem. The gateway was up, after all, so how could anything be wrong there? I bitched, I grumbled, and all they'd say is that I had to go home, unhook the router/firewall, hook up one and only one Windows machine to the DSL modem, then call them back.

I was pissed. I've done that before. Never, ever, has anything I do on my end made a difference. Every time it's been a problem on their end.
So I grumbled and bitched some more, figuring I'd have to leave early and go tear my network apart for no good reason.

An hour later, it's all working fine.

I spent a few years doing tech support. If you're reasonably intelligent, it's not that hard. Why is it that every time I call, I get a total and complete moron?

Tech support has got to be a job that would send me into daily temper tantrums. Here's a web site that will make even the dumbest computer user feel like a genius (must be why I like it): http://rinkworks.com/stupid/ Check it out.

I didn't mind it when I was doing it. For every idiot who can't double-click, you have somebody who is genuinely grateful for the help. Of course, I was younger and had more patience for idiots in those days.
