Tina's self-improvement project for the week. - Tina Marie's Ramblings

Tina's self-improvement project for the week.
I've always believed that one should constantly be striving to become competent in new ways. In fact, I'm often boggled by the number of people I meet who don't share this philosophy - I actually have friends who brag about their lack of competence in things.

So I always have a small self-improvement project going on, some of them more epic then most.

This week's task: Learn to properly shuffle a deck of cards.

Mike picked me up a set of these last weekend. They've been sitting on my desk all week, and every time I've got a spare five minutes, I take them out of the case and attempt to shuffle them.

Yesterday, I did it well for the first time, and today I'm doing it consistently.

I really shouldn't feel all warm and fuzzy about this, but I do.

(In other news, my glider checkride is rescheduled for the 30th of May, 1pm.)

wau. i like those cards. i wish they made a Tarot deck like that ;-)

i have small hands, and i've never been able to do a riffle-shuffle in my life. instead, i shuffle by cutting the deck and sort of randomly jamming one half into the end of the other, over and over again. obviously, if i have trouble with a normal deck of cards, i have even worse trouble with a standard Tarot deck, which is larger and differently proportioned (the cards are longer in relation to their width). i shuffle them by the same method.

i agree with you, though, that one should constantly be learning new skills (and new stuff in general), and i also can't understand how a person can be proud of being incompetent. i think the next skill upgrade i'm going after will be Flash MX.

Can you cut the deck one-handed?

Indeed. In this regard, we have something in common with fruit: "To be ripe beyond further increase is to prepare to die." (Whitman)
