Flowers for a fish.
For my birthday a year and a half ago, my little brother bought me a betta.

Fish Picture!

I wasn't quite sure about the whole fish-ownership thing. I did some research on the 'net, and quickly discovered that living in a vase with a plant wasn't exactly the ideal environment. For Valentine's Day that year, Michael got me flowers in a much bigger vase, so when the flowers died, the fish moved into the bigger vase alone and the lilies stayed in his old vase. He seemed perfectly happy living on the bookshelf in my office.

My mother kept bugging me to give him a name, but he was just "my fish" for almost a year. When Johnny Cash died, he finally got a name: He became A Fish Named Sue.

Every time I wandered by, he'd wiggle up against the side of the vase. I fed him every day, changed his water twice a week, bought him a mirror so he had somebody to play with when I wasn't around, and found him a fish-sitter when I went out of town.

But I still wasn't sure about the whole fish-ownership thing. I spent a lot of time tending to him, and, well, he was just a fish.

Last week, after a few days of not feeling well, he died. I came in and he was just laying on the bottom of his vase. I cleaned out the tank one last time, and sat it back on top of the bookcase, empty.

I can't express how much I miss him. I never realized how many times a day I looked up and smiled at his fishy cuteness, or how much I enjoyed standing next to his tank for 30 seconds on the way in or out. My office seems empty now.

Today, the coleus in my office bloomed for the first time - and the flowers are exactly the same shade as Sue. It seems properly circular, somehow.

"My little dog, a heartbeat at my feet." -- Edith Wharton

Change 'dog' to 'fish', 'at my feet' to 'on my bookshelf', and 'Edith Wharton' to 'involet'.
