Another weekend...
I'm finally done with all the requirements to get my glider rating. I did my three checkride-prep flights this weekend, plus flew 23 minutes on Sunday. The thermals are tiny and weak already, and I'm not good enough yet to stay up very long this time of year.

And I washed the airplane, in preparation for my trip next week - I'm taking the airplane, camping gear, parachutes, and heading
to Arizona. I need a vacation, bad. The plane doesn't look half bad when she's clean....

Also in preparation for my trip, I tried to order the latest database card for the plane's GPS. They've discontinued support. I'm pretty unhappy - it's going to be expensive to replace the unit (more then $1K), and I was hoping to get a few more years out of it.

Oh well. Back to work.

Of course

Of course they discontinued it. How could they make more money otherwise?

There should be a standard for GPS cartridges, a bit like USB Mass Storage Device + data file format. This is the trouble with GPS. It just makes IFR more expensive, and when you have to replace your "obsolete" (but still perfectly working) GPS ever couple of years, more expensive still. At least with VFR flying you can go with an out of date database, even if it isn't particularly ideal.

Re: Of course

Mine uses PCMCIA cards to update, and I think I'm going to try to reverse-engineer the database format, then update it off the web. We'll see how it goes...
