You know, teleporters will need a really good compression algorithm. If it's good enough, you could routinely make backups of the pattern buffers...

It would be just like restoring from your last saved game in NetHack.

Ah, but how do we know that a teleporter actually preserves your 'selfness'? What if it kills you on one end, and then creates an exact copy on the other end that *claims* to be you?

Or to put this impossible question another way: In a world capable of exactly duplicating your brain, what and where is 'you-ness'? Will there be any effect upon the original person if we create additional instances of them?
