I was craving chocolate, and I grabbed a Dove Promise out of the candy dish.

The message inside said:

"You're allowed to do nothing".

#9 - I am unlikely to be happy in any place where I cannot be surrounded by books.

#8 - One of the most decadent things in the world is to take a long bubble bath, then climb into bed between a set of clean sheets, still warm from the dryer...

This should really have been #1.

#7 - The most wonderful thing in the world is to hear someone you love say, "You know, I'll try anything once"...

#6 - Reading the manual is not a sign of defeat.

My commercial/multi/IFR checkride is scheduled. Feburary 26th, all day, at Weiser.

Flying the Duchess went well this weekend, although I'm having trouble remembering the cowl flaps. They're out of the way, so they're not in my "adjusting the engine" scan. Oh, and I forgot to pick up the gear after the emergency descent, and I didn't notice it because I was trying to find a better power setting then 24 squared. My CFI didn't notice it either. When I got abeam the numbers on downwind and reached for the handle, I realized it was already down.

This week, I'm going to put together maneuver checklists for everything in the PTS, so I don't screw up stuff like that on the checkride.

#5 - Humans were not meant to write multi-threaded code.
0x00000005 - Humans were also not meant to write assembly code.

(credit for this goes to [info]inviolet and Morris, who was somewhat misquoted. He didn't say humans weren't meant to write asm. He said writing asm wasn't fit work for humans.)

(okay, that's 2 today. But it'll help make up for none over the weekend.)

(I like the idea of posting one of those a day, at least until I start running short on them)

#4 - Some of the really great joys of life come from doing something because it makes someone else happy. Other of the really great joys in life come from doing what makes you (and only you) happy. Most of the stress in life comes from trying to maintain the balance.

If you follow this thought for a while, you come to what was a Great Revelation for me:
  • Sometimes, the thing that will make you happiest is to do something that is important to someone else.
  • Therefore, by asking, sometimes, for people to participate in something that makes you happy, you could be giving them the opportunity to be happy themselves.
  • Therefore: Asking for something is not always a bad thing.

#3 - It is not necessary to save the coloring books for a special occasion. The same is true of the special candle we can't burn, the special crayons we can't use, the special outfit we can't wear. Things don't last forever - you outgrow them, they melt, they get lost or broken - and you shouldn't waste the opportunity to enjoy them while they do last.

One of my favorite ST:TNG episodes mentions "Robin's Rules of Life". One of these days I'm going to write all of mine down, but here is today's:

Tina's Rules of Life, #1:
