Before the server that is collecting the mail died it was able to determine
the localusers when connecting by POP3.
The trouble is the hardisk caught on fire and so the files are not
recoverable.

So is somebody going to patch Sendmail so that it can handle the drives catching fire? If not, what's the matter with these guys? I bet qmail/exim/postfix handles it.
