I bought an airplane last night.
...well, 1/4th of an airplane. N11LT, a 1977 Grumman AA-5B.  I've known one of the partners for years, and I've been waiting for a spot to open for a while.  The last time someone sold a share, I was in the middle of being laid off and couldn't commit to it.  This time I had the cash, and after a month of 'negotiating' (read: waiting for the dude to reduce his price to something reasonable), I signed the papers last night.

My phone suffered an accident involving a washing machine, so instead of one of the pictures I took, have a generic picture of the plane I found on the internet:

I'm excited. Got a CFI scheduled, first flight is next Wednesday!

Awesome! Grummans are a hell of a lot of fun to fly, just be wary of pulling the power on final.

I'm more worried about not pulling the power on final - it's easy to run them off the end of a runway!

Oh yeah, they'll flooooooat forever if you don't nail your approach speed, but that laminar wing also stops flying with zero warning.

That's fantastic, I miss flying and the cheapness of it over in the US. Only this morning I was browsing shares in aircraft over here. Give it a couple of years to get the business off the ground and I might actually be able to buy into one :)

We can open the canopy in flight for some fresh air!

Oh, wait, that might not help. :)

If greeneyedsadie won't take you up on that, I certainly will! :-)

If I get you and the airplane in roughly the same geographic coordinates, I'd be thrilled to take you up. :)

The nearest general-aviation field to me is Monmouth Executive Airport, formerly known as Allaire. My 'brother' came to visit once, and took me there. It's got some weird crosswinds, largely because part of the main runway is below grade level. Also, this is the center of banner-towing operation for a good chunk of the Jersey shore (although I've heard rumors that they're going to shut that down).

If you ever wind up in NJ, use the text-message doohickey on my LJ userinfo page; tell me it's you, and include your cell phone number, and I'll give you mine, and then we can figure out the rest.

I worked at Grumman between college terms, back in the 1960s, and my dad worked there for about ten years. A lot of people don't know that Grumman ever made "general aviation" planes, not to mention cropdusters and Gulfstreams. That's a cute little plane! Mazel tov and happy landings!

grats! I've always enjoyed reading about how enthusiastic you are about flying.

Do you get to name your 1/4 airplane? Which quarter do you own?
skywhisperer From: skywhisperer Date: December 4th, 2013 02:36 pm (UTC) (Link)
Airplanes tend to name themselves, so when she's picked out a name, I'm sure she'll tell me. And the other partners say that the 1/4 I own is "the next quarter that needs maintenance!".

Thanks!
