There's probably going to be a new PC in my future, sometime after Windows 7 comes out. I'm tempted by the Shuttle, but just for comparison, I wanted to see what the equivalent Dell would cost. And I found this:

A 56K modem? How...quaint.

with DirtLink for a mere $9.95!

I remember when we had fake SLIP software running on starbase to allow us to pretend we had real internet access...

Yep! Those were the days. :)

A bunch of people tried to buy starbase when they shut it down a few years ago, but it doesn't resolve at this point.

Aww, get a Mac, and if you need to run any Windows software, Parallels :-)

If I was more sure of the graphics support, I would. The whole point is to upgrade my graphics card.

The graphics support seems fine - at least with a high-end ATi card. Not that I've really given it a proper "hard" test yet!

Just to say that Parallels runs Doom 3 in maximum quality, maximum detail, maximum everying perfectly :-) I don't think there's much trouble with graphics support with it.

Part the reason for my upgrade was to get better graphics since AGP is long deprecated (and all my 6 year old PC supports).

I've done a lot of moderately graphic intensive stuff on my Alum iMac and have found it rock solid while running XP via Bootcamp. Yeah, get a Mac.

And hey, I remember when 56K was kickass. Actually, 1200 Baud was kickass after starting out at 300 Baud!

I still have a ton of old modems kicking around. 1200, 2400, a 4800, 9600, 14.4, 28.8, and a few 56K's. Probably 2K worth of modems that I couldn't give away for free now.

Ahhh, good times indeed.
