Smashburger!

Smashburger. With flash-fried veggies - asparagus, carrots, and green beens. I'm sure the frying removed any hint of nutrition that may have been in them, but they were awfully good.

The burger was good but not mind-blowing. This was the first location in Houston, and they've gotten good reviews, so we figured we'd try them. They're probably not worth driving back to the med center for, but if they opened a location closer, I'd eat there.

Most yummy pickles, though.

On asparagus, I found The One True Way of doing asparagus on Christmas Day based on something I saw linked from the good eats web site.

Prepare the aparagus sticks, and then put in a tray with some olive oil. Smash up some garlic, add that, some sea salt (I guess "kosher salt", they don't call it that here), and I also added a little ground cinnamon. Let it all marinade for a while.

Then get the griddle so hot its starting to smoke, and put the asparagus off, and just get it so that the sugars in the asparagus sticks starts to caramelize on the outside, it doesn't take long. I just sort of did "That Looks About Right" for the quantities of salt, garlic (lots) and cinnamon (just a hint). I think the really important bit is getting whatever cooking utensil you're using (cast iron pan, or griddle, or just a barbecue grill) searingly hot to get the sugars in the asparagus to caramelise.

You think they could batter those veggies. Adding flour and grease to something always makes it taste better.
