Just Forkin' Around
Originally uploaded by SkyWhisperer
What I thought was the last part for the bike showed up last week. Tonight, I started putting things back together. My cool new fork-oil-changing syringe worked great, and I got the old oil out and new oil in with no problems. I dropped in my new progressive springs, cut the spacers, put those in, and closed up the forks, all without any major incidents.

Then I went to drop the headlight brackets over the forks - only to discover that they sent me two of the same side, instead of one right and one left. It turned out this was because the left one is discontinued from Suzuki.

Much cursing ensued. Then, after the cursing, there was googling, and I found a few non-Suzuki alternatives. I finally settled on these. I hate that they're chrome, but they should work. The first ones on this page are my next possibility if the JC Whitney ones don't work.

I'm going to take a chance and start putting the triple clamp and handlebars back together, since those brackets bolt on instead of sliding over the top of the fork. Of course, by doing that, I'm guaranteeing that they won't fit. But, hey, I'm just a risk-taking sort of girl....

That part was last used on the 2001 models. I suspect they just stopped making both sides, and they happened to run out of stock on one before the other.

i'd expect to see the catalog list them as "discontinued - 2 left" (or "discontinued - call for availability").
*shrug*

I think the problem is that I'm not ordering them from Suzuki, really. I'm ordering them from a dealer. So probably Suzuki knows how many they have left, but that information doesn't get propagated to the dealer (because it would change too often).

The point is moot now, anyway - I found a used set, and they'll be here on Friday.

well, then, here's to symmetrical headlights... ;-)

Despite any logical explanation (running out of one part before the other), it's still incredibly bizarre that only one side is discontinued and the other not!

Oh, tell Mike he needs to get a collective pitch helicopter. I can hover mine stably for almost 4 seconds now!

Yes, but he said you ran out of rotor blades already. :)

helicopters don't actually fly - they just beat the air into submission ;-D

I got some plastic ones (the originals are symmetrical wooden ones - symmetrical for aerobatic flight). The plastic ones can take much more punishment. The set that's on now has lasted two days and five fully charged batteries! Every other flight still ends in a crash, though.

Last night I managed to fly from one part of the room to another and land while actually meaning to do that, rather than the helicopter buggering off in the direction of its choice and me having to do a forced landing before I hit something hard!
