that's an amazing piece - a motorcycle story, from the slums of London, in a weirdly haunting Appalachian-verging-on-Celtic style. then i Googled "Richard Thompson" - hey, i remember Fairport Convention!

Appalachian! That was exactly the adjective I was looking for to describe it!

Even better, a lot of his stuff is available on eMusic, and I have a stack of downloads there just waiting to be used...

I suspect Fairport Convention is from before my time. :)

Appalachian, for sure - there's a great bluegrass cover of it by Del McCoury:

Fairport Convention was formed in 1967 (Wikipedia is your friend), and a version of the band still exists today. they've always been considered "folk-rock".

(i'm very strongly tempted to send that song to a musician friend of mine in Ireland, whose playing sometimes drifts towards that kind of style. but for all i know, he and Thompson are old drinking buddies...)
