Are you going to buy new? Also, why the need for so much power?

Are you going to buy new?

No, used. I'm hoping to get something in the $3-4K range.

Also, why the need for so much power?

Because I'm me. :)

I am only concerned because for an inexperienced rider, you can get into a lot of trouble very easily. If you start with a less powerful bike, you can easily trade up later when you're more comfortable with the power, know better what you want in a bike and how you use a bike, and you'll get a pretty new bike after you've dropped/scratched up/dented the old bike a couple of times. Just a thought.

You're right. And several of those come in lower HP versions. In all honesty, what I'll get is something in that style that I can find used when I'm ready to start shopping...

I'm more concerned about seat height then power, anyway - I'm pretty short, so I need something low.

Seat height is really, really important. And it'll rule out a lot of bikes right off the bat. I've heard there are kits you can buy to modify the seat a couple of inches, so you might want to look into that. Those two inches can make all the difference. ;)

Ah, yes, I think I got some spam about that recently.

Oh, no, wait, it added 2 inches...

back when i learned to ride, sometime in the Cretaceous Era, the only bikes that had a seat low enough for me were under 200cc. it wasn't that i couldn't handle a bigger bike while driving - i just couldn't keep it from falling over when i stopped! thankfully, that's no longer the case. (of course, it's been so long, and i've gotten so much older and fatter, my reflexes are probably shot now. and i can't afford a bike anyway.)

See if you can get a "pocket rocket" built for the Japanese market: usually in the 400cc range, fairly small (although you might find it too small). My Dad has a pocket rocket. He bought it in a crashed state for 500 quid and bought new fairings for it, and it's a good bike. I really need to learn myself so I can ride it :-)

You ought to come over for the Isle of Man TT (usually the last week in May and the first week in June) or the Southern 100...
